Communicating Sustainability
Research Initiative
In 2006, Hoggan and the GLOBE Foundation of Canada undertook the largest and most comprehensive analysis of the Canadian public’s and thought leader’s views and understanding of the concept of “sustainability.” We launched this ambitious public opinion and market research initiative - Communicating Sustainability – in the convictions that organizations with sustainability mandates could communicate more effectively - and reap bottom line benefits - if they better understood their key stakeholders’ perceptions, attitudes and values.
Working with some of the most innovative research companies in the business, Hoggan led the project and has since refined the results into tailored communications workshops, recommendations, strategy and positioning for organizations including Alcan, Ballard Power Systems, BC Hydro, Business Objects, Canadian Pacific Railway, Concord Pacific, David Suzuki Foundation, Ethical Funds Company, Fraser Basin Council, Lefebvre Foundation, Metro Vancouver (formerly the Greater Vancouver Regional District), NaiKun Wind Energy Group Inc., North West CruiseShip Association, International Centre for Sustainable Cities, Ostara Nutrient Recovery Technologies Inc., University of British Columbia, Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and Vancouver Port Authority. Hoggan has presented research findings and explained the implications to audiences including government, business and industry networks.

Environmental Advocacy Communications
Hoggan has been working with the David Suzuki Foundation (DSF) since its inception in 1990. Our agency offers strategic advice on various communications issues as well as media training and ongoing public relations support. Our counsel on public education and communications strategies has helped DSF to raise it profile and build bridges to the corporate community, thereby increasing its influence over public policy.

Hoggan has offered strategic and fundraising assistance to Future Generations, an international not-for-profit organization that seeks to promote equitable community change that integrates environmental conservation with community development. Future Generations’ Four Great Rivers project is helping to preserve the second largest concentration of biodiversity in Asia, protects watersheds for 20 per cent of humanity, and implements a management strategy based on local stewardship.

Communicating Corporate Change
Hoggan recently worked with Ballard Power Systems to announce the sale of its automotive fuel cell assets to concentrate in nearer-term commercial markets. We helped the company develop investor and media material and connected with key reporters to ensure complete, accurate and timely media coverage.

Telling Your Story to Investors
Vancouver-based QLT Inc. is one of Canada’s leading biotechnology companies. For more than 15 years, Hoggan has worked with QLT Inc. to help raise awareness among key audiences, including U.S. and Canadian shareholders. As part of an overall communications strategy, we designed and implemented a proactive media relations program to raise the profile of QLT Inc. through the North American business, financial and consumer media.
Using research to determine investor, analyst and media attitudes toward the company, Hoggan and QLT Inc. developed messages and positions for senior management that resonated with key shareholders. This involved developing media stories to reach shareholders, potential patients and partner companies through the following media outlets: Businessweek, CBC, CNN, CNBC, CNN-fn, Dateline (NBC), The Economist, Fortune, The Globe and Mail, Investor’s Business Daily, Life, Maclean’s, The National Post, The New York Times, Newsweek, Time, US News & World Report. less
Building Profile Across Canada
For more than 18 years, Hoggan has provided communications and media relations counsel and services to Century 21 Canada Limited Partnership including annual and semi-annual house price surveys that have consistently attracted extensive (and strategic) media coverage across the country.
Issues Management
Managing Reputations
Hoggan is proud to have provided crisis communications and media relations counsel to the organic food chain Capers Community Markets during a 2003 crisis that unfolded after a Capers employee was found to have Hepatitis. Capers reacted brilliantly and responsibility, coming out of the crisis with a brand that was, if anything, stronger than before. The Hoggan team won the Public Relations Society of America’s Silver Anvil Award for crisis management, and then followed on with a community and media relations plan that cemented Capers’ good reputation with its customers and its community.
